haiku

haiku
   (hye-koo) [Japanese] A highly refined Japanese verse form written in three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively, in which the poet can use allusions that evoke a strong, though unspoken, emotional response. Once limited to descriptions of nature and the seasons, its range of subjects has broadened.
   Because haiku almost always involves nature, Heaney sought to incorporate that element into his poems. —The New York Times, November 12, 1998.
